AUSTRALIA will have its first commercial contactless mobile payment system using near-field communication (NFC) technology operating in months.

The Commonwealth Bank today said it would launch a full commercial NFC payment system built around the iPhone and Mastercard's PayPass contactless payment platform.

The "wave and go" mobile payment system has been integrated into the CBA's upcoming mobile banking application for the iPhone called Kaching which is scheduled for commercial launch in the next couple of months.

Adam Bennett, chief information officer for the bank's retail and business division, confirmed that the commercial NFC system would be available in time for Kaching's public launch.

"Kaching is currently in internal pilot so the NFC capability is live and we have a number of staff who are using that capability right now and we'll be looking to make that available to the public over the coming months," Mr Bennett said.

The new mobile banking application contains a contactless payment function that works with an NFC chip built into a casing the bank has designed for newer models of the iPhone.

The timing of the launch is roughly in line with predictions by Visa Australia in early October that negotiations between mobile carriers, banks and handset makers had reached a sufficient level of consensus to allow the establishment of a commercial service in Australia "within a few months".

CBA estimates there are currently around 42,000 NFC readers rolled out in Australian retail merchant premises. The bank also said that chip makers around the world were sitting on orders for half-a-billion NFC chips destined for handsets.

However, some question marks over the Australian retail payment ecosystem's readiness for contactless payments remained.

Woolworths has committed to rolling out contactless readers across its supermarkets, Big W department stores, Dick Smith-branded outlets, Caltex petrol stations, and its BWS, Dan Murphys, and Woolworths Liquor outlets.

However, the Coles group of retail outlets was earlier this month still equivocating on whether to follow.

The Coles Group includes its supermarket chain, 700 Coles Express-branded Shell service stations, and the Liquorland and Vintage Cellars liquor brands.

Mr Bennett said he thought penetration of readers was sufficient to make the launch viable "but clearly there are opportunities for this technology to develop and grow"
Contactless infrastructure would become pervasive over "the coming months and years".

CBA said it would make its iPhone casing available free to consumers wishing to use the NFC system as an alternative or replacement for their credit card.

In what it described as a world first in mobile banking, the CBA also revealed that Kaching would offer consumer-to-consumer mobile payments via SMS, email and Facebook.

CBA customers that register their mobile number with their bank accounts can instantly transfer money to each other using an SMS-based system.

Kaching, which has also been designed with a strong focus on tapping into consumer social networks, allows customers to make payments to individuals via their Facebook identities.

While payment processing is not conducted across Facebook infrastructure the social network's authentication service is used with CBA online "collection points" to receive payments.

The collection points allow CBA customers to make payments to customers of other banks. To pay non-CBA account holders, CBA customers send payees a code generated by the bank via whatever method they choose. In the case of payments to Facebook subscribers, recipients enter the code at the collection point and verify their identity using their Facebook login and password.

Kaching is currently only available on the iPhone however it's understood that CBA has started developing a version for Google Android-based devices.
